Chapter Sixteen

“You’re fucking kidding me.”

At Rachel’s frown, Charlie elbowed him in the ribs and hissed, “Don’t curse. You know she doesn’t like that.”

“Dude. She’s a ghost.” Ian snorted. “She’s not real.”

The lights flickered, and a fire roared out of the empty fireplace. Ian jumped back, dragging Charlie with him. “What the hell? You could’ve burned us.”

“Is that real enough for you?” Her lips pursed, and a cold chill ran through Ian as she fixed him with a look so steely, he shivered. God, he was so going to have nightmares from all this like he did when he was a little kid. He’d beg to stay up late and watch television with his sisters, and they’d always pick scary movies, knowing he hated them. He shifted closer to Charlie. “And don’t worry. I wouldn’t have hurt Charlie.” She beamed at Charlie then directing a withering gaze, as only a ghost could, at him. “I can’t say the same about you.”

“Argh.” Ian threw up his hands. “This is nuts. We’re standing here talking to a ghost who told us we’re dead boyfriends reincarnated from a hundred years ago, and we’re just supposed to accept that?”

She shot him a furious look before smiling sweetly at Charlie. “You understand, don’t you, dear? You were the one with a heart.”

“I have a heart,” Ian yelled. “I’m a fu-I’m a really nice guy. I call my sisters and parents every week and feed stray cats.”

Rachel sniffed. “So you say. Now.” Dismissing him, she spoke directly to Charlie. “I’m going to show you something.”

“Rachel, I don’t understand anything you’re saying.”

She floated off the chair and pointed to the table. “Sit down and watch the mirror.” Her voice echoed in the room as she vanished in a silvery haze, leaving Ian and Charlie staring at each other.

“Well, that was weird.” Charlie brushed his hair back, and—giving the chair Rachel vacated a wide berth—sat at the table. “Do you want to stay and see what she has to show us?”

Ian couldn’t be sure. Seeing his friends had already freaked him out slightly, and he knew he had some serious thinking to do.

But then there was Charlie.

Charlie, with his head bent over the table, a shaft of light sparking that fascinating golden glow around him.

Charlie, with the sweetly crooked smile and heavy-lidded bedroom eyes, who made Ian’s heart pound, his cock hard, and his breath grow short.

What happened to his happy-go-lucky, easy way of life?

“Ian?” Charlie’s questioning green eyes met his. “Do you want to do this?”

What the hell was he going to do about Charlie?

Apparently, whatever Charlie wanted, because Ian couldn’t figure out how to say no to him.

Nor did he want to. Ian might be confused about many things, but not about how it felt with Charlie. Different. Exciting. And so damn right.

“Sure.”

He took the chair next to Charlie, and they gazed up at the mirror. They didn’t have to wait long before it flickered to life.

Eddie sat in the yard, a book in his lap. A sheet of writing paper covered the pages, and he gripped the pencil in his hand.
